Prem Chopra is a veteran film actor, who can be called a versatile actor with finesse. He has injected substance to the films he has acted in. This thespian actor had a film career that has spanned over six decades and 350+ films. Even though he is known for his negative roles in Bollywood movies, he has a soft-spoken diction. Prem Chopra was born on 23rd September 1935 in Lahore, present-day Pakistan. After partition, his Punjab Khatri family settled in Shimla. He completed his education in Shimla and Punjab University and went to Mumbai to pursue a career in films. He had participated in college dramatics and had a keen interest in acting. He initially struggled in Mumbai and worked with The Times of India to supplement his income. His first Bollywood debut film had Bharat Bhushan in the lead role. The film titled Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh in 1960 went unnoticed. His Punjabi film, Chaudhary Karnail Singh, a romantic love story, won National awards in the best actress and best film category. This gave him due recognition and he followed it up with a commendable performance in another Punjabi Film, Sapni. After that, he worked in many Punjabi and Hindi films due to his passion for acting. He played some rare positive roles in his initial movies. It was during the filming of Main Shadi Karne Chala that he was suggested that he become a villain. His films Upkaar and Teesri Manzil were released in 1967 and he started getting more offers in films as a villain. It was during this time that he left his job at The Times of India and started concentrating on acting in movies. His famous movies are Shaheed, Upkaar, Do Raaste, Kati Patang, Dostana and Phool Bane Angaarey - to name a few. His movies with positive roles include Kunwari, Shaheed, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and many others. He took up positive roles in the later part of his acting career. After 2005, he gradually started to reduce his work in movies. Prem Chopra was married to Uma and has three daughters. His daughter Rakita Nanda wrote his biography titled Prem Naam Hai Mera that was released in 2014.
