Film Review - Mission Mangal The film is a fictional version of the events that took place around, Mangalyaan, India’s first interplanetary space venture. The story begins when GSLV (fat boy) mission fails abruptly. After this failure, scientist Rakesh Dhawan played by Akshay Kumar, is forced to step down to the Mars Mission which was seen as unachievable and hence will act as a silent force that may drive Dr. Rakesh to give up his job. But Rakesh claims himself to be ‘old-school” and decides to stay on board as “ I cannot live without science” he quotes. Well this is truly justified as he doesn’t seem to have a life of his own. All we know about him is that he is a mad genius, who occasionally hums to bollywood songs and has a good sense of humour-that’s all. No sign of his family, friends or any reason how did he turn into a person, he is now. Well, this poor writing doesn’t confide to Akshay, the other characters played by Kriti Kulhari, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Sharman Joshi and Nithya Menon, also suffer the same fate. They all are more sort of an extended cameo in the film, who individually have some traits to add on to the fulfillment of the overall story. But all credits must be given to the writers for creating Dr. Tara Shinde, the project head. She is a multitasking homemaker and an ambitious scientist for whom being a scientist is not just a job, but her passion. Vidya Balan, who plays Tara, skilfully uses her immense acting traits to give us the only character we look forward to, during the movie. Her perseverant attitude and excellent problem skills were the driving force of the plot. Overall, the first half was well detailed, while the second half was way too fast and filled with too simplified scientific analogies. Yet, you clap in the end because it is still a story about India’s greatest accomplishment. You will leave the theater with a sense of patriotism and joy for the nation. In all, Mission Mangal should be watched, as despite its crooked storyline, it gives us Indians a reason to celebrate a victorious moment for our country. The voice of our Prime Minister, during the end credits was the icing on the cake.
